Christmas in Bangkok: mall lights, river fireworks and the New Year countdown
Bangkok greets the cool season with a blaze of light. Giant trees rise in front of the malls of Ratchaprasong, the hotels lay on festive feasts, and on New Year’s Eve fireworks burst over the Chao Phraya as the whole city counts down together.

Christmas lights
From late November the shopping district of Ratchaprasong and Siam becomes Bangkok’s Christmas quarter, with giant trees and light installations in front of the great malls, while the riverside malls and the grand hotels along the Chao Phraya put on their own displays. The cool, dry season makes evening walks a pleasure.
Christmas Mass and festive tables
Assumption Cathedral in Bang Rak, the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bangkok, celebrates Christmas Masses, and the city’s other churches hold carol services through December. For Christmas lunch, the riverside hotels compete with festive buffets and brunches.
Our advice: book Christmas and New Year meals early; the most popular riverside tables sell out weeks ahead.
New Year’s Eve on the Chao Phraya
New Year’s Eve is Bangkok’s biggest party. Crowds fill the square at Ratchaprasong for a countdown concert, and along the Chao Phraya fireworks light up the river at midnight, watched from the riverbanks, dinner cruises and rooftop bars. Roads around the main venues close from the afternoon, so take the BTS, MRT or a river boat.
The celebrations come round again with Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027, when Yaowarat, Chinatown, fills with lanterns, lion dances and food stalls.
